New Project – Inclusion Matters
June 6, 2019
Inclusion Matters is a new fellowship and mentoring project at the Centre for Stories for emerging writers funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. There are two streams – Mentoring and the Centre for Stories Hot Desk Fellowships. Both are open for writers that wish to improve their craft, to work in a supportive community, and who have projects that would benefit from feedback. Both programs are designed for people living in Western Australia who identify as culturally and linguistically diverse.
“[Ways of Being Here] was my first ever publication and it was a life changing experience. Through this publication I was exposed to numerous other opportunities that would have been otherwise impossible…The project enabled me to improve my writing skills and I learned a lot about the publishing industry. Most importantly, I gained self-confidence and an increased belief that I can make my dream of publication a reality.”
—Yuot Alaak, Ways of Being Here mentoring project at Centre for Stories.
“My expectations were both met and exceeded. In the five months I was mentored by Elizabeth Tan, I’ve learnt and grown so much both in my writing craft and in my awareness about the industry. Elizabeth was so humble and easy to work with, providing me feedback and guidance in a respectful way, alleviating my initial anxiety about being critiqued on my work.”
—Raihanaty A Jalil, Indian Ocean mentoring project at Centre for Stories.
“After the conclusion of my mentorship, I went on to win a national writing prize as well as several state prizes. Since working with CFS during Ways of Being Here I have been published locally and nationally, and I am currently completing my first novel, a feat that would not have been possible without the skills gained through the mentorship and the ongoing support of the Centre.”
—Rafeif Ismail, Ways of Being Here mentoring project at Centre for Stories.
