So many good people interact with us online and walk through our doors at the Centre for Stories, and so we’re pretty proud of the little community we’ve grown. Collaborations often turn into comradeships and patrons become friends. Short Talks is a series of interviews highlighting the remarkable people who have connected with us at the Centre for Stories. Some are writers, poets, and storytellers, and others are arts workers, community leaders, and small business owners.

We invite you to get to know our friends a little more. Today, we feature Louisa Choi, the marketing and events manager at boutique Northbridge hotel, Alex Hotel.

Alex Hotel is hosting an event as part of the Centre’s upcoming Side Walks storytelling event in October. Could you tell us how this connection came about?

We pride ourselves in getting to know our neighbours and try to see where we can provide support and so Alex Hotel and Centre for Stories has worked together on a couple of events in 2018 – 2019.

Team Alex are unashamed Northbridge-lovers situated right in the heart of the suburb. Can you tell us some of your favourite local joints?

So much is here! Here are a few:

 To you, what’s valuable or important about organisations like Alex Hotel collaborating with others (like, for example, the Centre for Stories!?)

I think it is important to support the arts and culture industry because it is a form of expression which plays a huge part in shaping the future of our world. I think creativity is crucial to the development of civilisation and so supporting organisations in this respect is essentially aiding that process. These are skills that can be applied in day to day activities from communication, to problem solving and so on and so forth.

Side Walks is a day-long celebration of storytelling. What does storytelling mean to you—and why do you think it’s important?

Storytelling is essentially creative communication and a skill that has the power to evoke emotion and inspire and I think it is important to be able to recognise and feel those emotions because it reminds us that we are all human. It is also something that allows us to train our mind to translate words into visuals that is personal to you. I think being able to tell a story for all those reasons is a very beautiful thing.

 Who or what is exciting you in Perth’s arts scene at the moment?

Alex Hotel is hosting an event as part of the Centre’s upcoming Side Walks storytelling event in October.
