ORIGINAL WORKSHOP CALL-OUT

Are you passionate about supporting the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament? Do you identify as First Nations or culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD)?

Hear Our Voices is a once-in-a-lifetime storytelling opportunity for people from diverse Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and CaLD communities in Boorloo/Perth to share your true, real-life stories behind why you will be voting YES in the upcoming referendum on Voice to Parliament. The proposed date for the referendum is October 14th and every story might help to possibly sway an undecided voter – so let’s make history together!

Centre for Stories is excited to offer two FREE storytelling workshops in the lead-up to the referendum that bring diverse migrants and First Nations people together, to yarn sovereignty, self-determination, and equity. We are bringing these two groups together to engage broader and more diverse audiences in the referendum campaign. All stories will be translated into languages such as Hindi, Malay, Mandarin and Tagalog and shared widely.

By the end of our workshops, each participant will have crafted an impactful short story that you will be then offered the chance to share publicly with your fellow participants: either at upcoming in-person events or online. If you do choose to share your story, you will be paid an honorarium fee. Check out an example of a previous story we workshopped here.

Our workshops will be facilitated by First Nations storytellers only. The workshops are scheduled for:

Register your interest below to attend one or both of these FREE workshops and learn the fundamentals of storytelling skills; improve your public speaking and confidence; bond with other passionate Yes voters; and let your voice be heard in one of the most historic moments in Australian history.

We are looking for stories about what self-determination looks like and why it works, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander strengths, creativity and resilience in the face of discrimination and disadvantage, and speaking up to fight inequality. We want to know why you are voting Yes. If you are from a migrant or culturally diverse background, and not sure what you will contribute – don’t worry! As long as you are planning on voting yes, we want to hear from you.

With your consent, your stories may be shared live at events prior to the referendum, recorded and shared via Centre for Stories communications, and through local radio and other partner organisations. Now is your time to be heard.

Places are limited so that the workshops can be intimate and allow space for one-on-one story development. For this reason, participants will be selected by Centre for Stories after we have assessed your registration form. Please submit below.

Hear Our Voices was generously funded through the 2023 Rapid Response Referendum Grant Round from the Australia Communities Foundation.

Expressions of Interest submissions closed on SEPTEMBER 15th, 11:59PM AWST.

Let us know which date/time you prefer or if you can make both. There will be a one hour lunch or dinner break for both options.
We ask that you are open to sharing your story publicly from the beginning, however we will talk about consent throughout the workshop and you will have the opportunity to give consent to share your story or not only once you have finished crafting it and feel comfortable in doing so. We understand that you might not know yet what your final story will be at this point.
