Centre for Stories
Centre for Stories is partnering with Editors WA to create an evening of speed dating specially designed for emerging and mid-career writers and editors. Share your ideas and stories with keen ears as you discuss your work and dream projects.
After an information discussion from Jess Gately on working with editors and some helpful tips on the publication journey, writers will be randomly paired with editors to discuss their writing projects under a time limit before moving along to the next participant.
At the end of the evening, an anonymous vote will put you in contact with the writer or editor you ‘clicked with’ best. From there you are encouraged to begin a writing/editing partnership – we highly recommend only registering for this event if you intend to pay editor’s fees to assist with your manuscript.
Tickets are pay-what-you-feel from $15 and spaces are strictly limited. Register as a Writer or as an Editor.

Jess Gately
Jess Gately is a freelance publishing professional specialising in structural editing for speculative fiction. She tutors at Curtin University, is the President of Editors WA (a branch of the Institute of Professional Editors), sits on the Board for the Small Press Network of Australia, and has worked for a number of literary organisations and publishers as well as having been a judge for the Aurealis Awards since 2019. Her master’s thesis explored the process of editing a work of speculative fiction that utilises fictional languages. Jess is passionate about working with emerging Australian writers and editors.
Liam Selby
Liam is a freelance editor and author based in Perth, Western Australia, with a love for all things genre fiction, specifically fantasy and science fiction with a dash of horror. He’s a certified copy-editing and proofreading master, and has honed his skills in language editing and proofreading through years of experience. He’s known for working with a variety of authors and adapting his editing style to complement each author’s unique voice. Whether you’re a fantasy author, a science fiction scribe, or a storyteller of any other genre, Liam will help bring your story to life with his magic touch.
Marise Phillips
Marise Phillips is an emerging Indian-Australian writer and editor based in Perth/Nyoongar country. Marise has been published in the RMIT University’s Professional Writing and Editing 2020 Anthology, Spiral. She was recently selected as an Editing Fellow for Green Leaves, Red River and edited several short debut poetry collections in 2023. She is particularly drawn to non-fiction and creative non-fiction.
Karen Peradon
Karen is a freelance editor and self-published author. Originally from the south of England, she has lived in Perth for 14 years. She has been a copyeditor since 2011 in her business, Red Feather Publishing, after achieving a Diploma of Publishing (Professional Book Editing, Proofreading and Publishing). Words are her medium. Be it reading, writing or playing, she loves creating, shaping and polishing manuscripts. Karen has edited novels, non-fiction, memoirs, theses, resumes, websites, essays, film scripts, brochures and more. As an author, Karen knows how much effort goes into creating a piece of writing, so she treats her client’s work and feelings with respect. All edits are suggestions, with explanations and rationale. Her aim is that her editing makes the author a better writer. She has also guided many clients through the self-publishing process and has run courses on how to self-publish.

The event will be held at Centre for Stories, Northbridge WA 6003. Centre for Stories is a wheelchair accessible venue.
The Perth train station is a 10-minute walk from Centre for Stories. The closest Wilson parking is 2 minutes away at Northbridge Central, 8/6 Errichetti Place.
