An exciting opportunity for First Nations writers who have an interest in creating children’s books and want to learn more about becoming an author – the challenges and successes!

Learn the fundamentals of writing your own children’s book, particularly for children under the age of 8 year’s old; receive prompts from Isobel to get started with new ideas; and begin mapping out your own story on paper. This workshop is suited to any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person with an interest in children’s books, including bilingual books in their own languages. No prior writing or publication experience required.

ABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR

Isobel Bevis a Wilman, Ballardong Noongar woman, born and raised in Collie, south-west of Western Australia, currently living on Bindjareb boodja with her husband and three daughters. She is the author of ‘Nedingar: Ancestors‘ published by Fremantle Press. Raised in a large Noongar family and growing up on Wilman Country, she has a strong connection to Minninup River where her Ancestors are resting.

WHAT TO BRING?

Bring along a rough idea (in your head) of the picture book you are interested in creating. Pen and paper will be provided. If you want to take notes, bring your own laptop or pen and paper to write. You are also welcome to bring your own breakfast or snacks. Tea and coffee will be available for free.

Tickets are FREE but you must book below as spaces are limited. We are running this workshop for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only as part of our First Nations Writers WA Program, generously made possible thanks to Spinifex Foundation.

LOCATION AND TRANSPORT

The event will be held at Centre for Stories, Northbridge WA 6003. Centre for Stories is a wheelchair accessible venue.

The Perth train station is a 10-minute walk from Centre for Stories. The closest Wilson parking is 2 minutes away at Northbridge Central, 8/6 Errichetti Place.
