Overview

Backstories Festival is a multi-sited storytelling festival that takes place across backyards in Perth and regional Western Australia. Come along for amazing stories, live local music, and great company.

How does it work?

We train local community members in the art of oral storytelling through a series of group and one-on-one workshops. Stories are always true, first-person memories of things they have experienced and want to share with their community. We often explore stories with themes of connection to place and people.

We produce a series of events that are situated in people’s backyards in suburban areas, bringing impactful and diverse human stories to spaces that intrinsically unite and connect neighbours. With live music, delicious food and stories that will amaze, you will love discovering the secrets in your own backyards.

We can record and film the stories live at events so that they may be shared with a broader audience online and be saved as a collection on our website for posterity.

Who have we worked with?

Centre for Stories has run Backstories Festival in many suburbs in the Perth metropolitan area, as well as regional towns, including Broome, Kalgoorlie, Margaret River, Bunbury and more. Previous partners include Town Team Movement, Perth Festival, City of Joondalup, Nyamba Buru Yawuru, and City of Fremantle.
