Centre for Stories

Backyard Truth Telling events have launched

Truth-telling stories is finally coming soon to Walyalup backyards this month with a new partnership between Centre for Stories and City of Fremantle.

October 10, 2024

As a part of the City of Fremantle commitment to reconciliation, Centre for Stories is pleased to be a partner for the cities Truth Telling program and announce that the events we have produced together are now live.

The Backyard Truth Telling Series is a multi-sited storytelling program that brings truth telling into the backyards of Walyalup residents to provide an opportunity for the local community to come together to connect, learn and listen to storytellers share their lived experiences, in their own voices, in their own way.

UPDATE: Submit a Truth-Listening Reflection Form

We believe storytelling is a two-way, reciprocal process and invite the audience to respond to the speakers and their stories if you have attended an event.

Below are a list of questions that invite reflection on the Backyard Truth-telling event you attended. We may share these responses with the storytellers and/or via Centre for Stories communications if you give your consent. These questions are not compulsory and you can answer as many as you like.

About the program

Each event will feature stories from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous members of the local community who will speak about difficult truths, hidden histories and reimagined futures, with a focus on stories that speak to the impacts of colonisation and to the resilience and self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

After stories are shared, audience members are invited to join informal yarning circles and share their own stories in a safe and supported space.

Enjoy local acoustic music by twilight with light food provided. Your host for the evening will be the storytellers mentor, the wonderful Ron Bradfield Jnr.

Featuring Storytellers: Abid Imam, Bill Adlam, Brendan Moore, Casey Mulder, Gerrard Shaw, Jason Hunter, Jo Abraham, Mariela Espino Zuppa, Nandi Chinna, Phil O’Donoghue, Trish Ratajczak and Vaughan Wayne.
