Centre for Stories

That’s a wrap on Story Lounge!

Whether you donated a piece of furniture for the space, ran an event with us, used the space for your own event, or just popped in to say hello or to hang out – thank you!

February 16, 2023

Last year in April we were fortunate enough to be given a space to activate in Hay Street Mall in Perth’s CBD by the Humich Group.

We opened Story Lounge to our community and the public three days a week and invited them to explore our archive of oral stories and our First Nations Library, or to share their own story with us.

We also ran regular events like our First Nations Book Club, Write Night in the City, and Undercurrent, and a range of conversations and workshops as well – many of which were in partnership with other community or art organisations.

Some of our favourite events included Drag Story Time with Rabble Books, Empty Chair for World Press Freedom Day with PEN Perth, Existing and Resisting with Transfolk of WA, Show Up Deadly for the Arts for NAIDOC, Stories We Share with TAB Family & Friends, Flash Fiction Fridays with Night Parrot Press, and Creative Storytelling with the Literature Centre.

We also shared Story Lounge with several other organisations, community groups, and individuals so they had a space in the city to use for their own events and it was wonderful to see them bring the CBD to life in their own unique ways.

We’ve loved having Story Lounge for the past year and we’re so grateful for everyone who was a part of it – whether you donated a piece of furniture for the space, ran an event with us, used the space for your own event, or just popped in to say hello or to hang out.

Thanks again to the Humich Group for having us, to the City of Perth and Australia Council for the Arts who funded our programming at the Lounge, and a special thanks to Sun-Mi Clyburn for all of your personal support.

We’re going to miss Story Lounge but our work continues at the Centre in Northbridge so we’ll see you there soon!
