Announcing Patricia Kailis International Writing Fellow, Sihle Ntuli!
Centre for Stories is pleased to announce Sihle Ntuli as the Winner of the Patricia Kailis International Writing Fellowship. Valued at $35,000, the Fellow will work on a manuscript in Perth for three months in 2024.
Sihle Ntuli is a poet from Durban, South Africa and is a recipient of the 2023 Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Studies Writing Fellowship for his poetry. His work has been featured in leading journals such as Frontier Poetry, SAND Journal and Mizna, amongst others. A Best of The Net & Pushcart Nominee. He is the author of two poetry chapbooks Rumblin (uHlanga 2020) and The Nation (River Glass Books 2023) alongside two poetry collections Stranger (Aerial Publishing 2015) & Zabalaza Republic (Botsotso 2023).
The Patricia Kailis International Writing Fellowship aims to ‘support the work of talented individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to ideas and practices that foster belonging and better cross-cultural understanding’, ‘deepen and broaden the literary culture in Western Australia’, and offer Western Australian emerging writers access to writers of international reputation. Centre for Stories program director Robert Wood judged the applications alongside author Roanna Gonsalves and senior producer at Performing Lines, WA Jeremy Smith
The judging committee appreciated Sihle’s attention to the craft of writing itself, his service to the literary community as a whole, and his lived experience as it informs an aesthetic and ethical perspective. We will value his contribution as an artist and a person, and know that our community here will be elevated and enriched by his presence.
