Meet the Intern – Emily Brown
“I came to Centre for Stories to do an internship through uni, but it’s been one of the best opportunities and experiences I could have asked for.”

December 14, 2022
We consider ourselves very lucky to collaborate with and work alongside talented and dynamic interns at Centre for Stories. In 2022, we welcomed several interns through our doors who each, in their own way, made their mark and we, in turn, celebrate them!
Emily Brown interned for Centre for Stories’ inner-city pop-up, Story Lounge. This dynamic events and marketing internship allows interns to see the ins-and-outs of events production and venue management in Perth. Read below to find out more about Emily.

Tell us a bit about yourself, Emily! Where have you come from, where are you going, and who and what experiences have shaped you along the way?
I’m Emily and I’ve lived in Perth for almost my whole life, and I think I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I don’t think there was ever a different career that I wanted to consider. Ever since I was really little, I wanted to be an author, probably because my parents were really big readers and were always reading books to me. When I was old enough to read books on my own, I just never stopped, and I don’t think there are many days that go by where I don’t pick up a book to read. I’ve just finished a degree in creative writing and professional writing and publishing at Curtin University, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to continue writing in my career path moving forward.
As you well know, we’re all about stories here. Do you have a favourite story, fictional or factual? Maybe something that makes you laugh or think, or something that you always come back to?
I’m not sure about my favourite story, but a book that I read while I was in high school that I still think about a lot is A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland. It’s a book that reminds me to always try and overcome my fears, and to not miss out on opportunities because I’m scared of how things will turn out, and it’s something I try and live by today.
While we’re talking about stories, can you tell us about the last book you read?
The last book I read was called The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera, and it’s one of those books with beautiful writing that really got me thinking. It’s so well written and it tackles the question ‘what would you do if you knew you only had 24 hours left to live?’ and how would that knowledge affect a lot of your decisions. It’s one of those novels that I think will definitely stay with me for a long time.
So, what brought you to Centre for Stories?
I came to Centre for Stories to do an internship through uni, but it’s been one of the best opportunities and experiences I could have asked for. I really love Centre for Stories and getting to work on social media posts and event promotion. During my internship I got to do all kinds of different tasks at Centre for Stories, and all of them were super fascinating and interesting to me, because no day was same, and sometimes I was cross-posting event pages, some days I was writing newsletters for the month, and others I was proofreading so I really enjoyed it.
You’ve been helping us out with our social media and event planning, as well as helping us keep our pop-up, Story Lounge, going. For that we are very grateful! How have you found the experience?
It was definitely a great experience and it’s something that I enjoyed doing every week when I came into Story Lounge. Centre for Stories is always running so many interesting events and it’s great to promote them on social media and learn more about the people these events involve.
Has there been a highlight or stand-out moment from your time at Centre for Stories?
I think for me it was definitely being the venue manager for one of the Backstories events and getting to attend and experience the live story telling. As an intern I’ve mostly just seen the behind-the-scenes promotional stuff for social media so actually attending the event that I helped promote on social media was super interesting.
What are you most looking forward to on your horizon?
Now that’s I’ve finished uni, I’m mostly just looking forward to the different opportunities in my future and a career in the arts sector. Hopefully somewhere down the line, I’ll also get the chance to publish my own book, because ever since I was very little that’s something I’ve wanted to do.
