Before you submit your manuscript, how do you make sure it’s the best it can be? Join freelance editor Jess Gately and she teaches you how to assess elements of language, grammar and punctuation in your own novel by yourself, in this workshop designed to help you in the initial stages of self-editing.

This workshop is ideal for writers who already have at least a first draft of their manuscript and are looking at progressing to the next stage, or anyone interested in improving their copy-editing.

This workshop is part 2 of a 2-part course. It is preceded by a workshop from Jess Gately on the structural edit.

WHAT TO BRING & CATERING

A notebook and pen or note-taking device, a smartphone with access to the internet and social media apps, and either a short sample of one of your own writing/manuscript sample, or a sample from a favourite book.

Jess Gately is a freelance publishing professional with a particular penchant for speculative fiction. She works as a structural editor and a tutor at Curtin University, is the President of Editors WA (a branch of the Institute of Professional Editors), sits on the Board for the Small Press Network of Australia, and has worked for Perth Festival as the Literature and Ideas Program Coordinator, Night Parrot Press as the Publishing Coordinator, and Fremantle Press as the Events and Projects Officer. She has been a judge for the Aurealis Awards since 2019 and her master's thesis explored the process of editing a work of speculative fiction that utilises fictional languages.
