Lucy’s biological father, Franco, was born in Naples. She was raised in a loving family without knowledge of her blood father or her heritage until her early twenties. She didn’t meet her father until her late twenties. She met her three Italian siblings at Franco’s funeral in 1998. In her thirties she decided to travel to Naples and meet her wider family. What had been kept largely secret in the lifetimes of her parents is now openly acknowledged in her family. Although it’s complicated, it is not without its joys.

Lisa’s father, Rudolfo (Rudy) was born in Frigento, Italy and migrated with his family to Australia when he was five years old. Her mother and two sisters left their father when she was fifteen and have had no contact with any Italian family members since. Despite her alienation from her Italian family her appearance invites questions and stereotypes about her ethnicity. This often leaves her confused about her cultural identity.

  Lucy Dougan is a widely published prize-winning poet. Her books include White Clay and The Guardians (Giramondo). In 2016 The Guardians won the WA Premier’s Book Award for poetry. With Tim Dolin, she is co-editor of The Collected Poems of Fay Zwicky (UWAP, 2017). With Beverly Taylor, she is working on a new edition of Anne Brontë’s poems for Cambridge UP. Her new poetry collection, Monster Field, is forthcoming with Giramondo in 2022. She is currently the poetry editor for Westerly.

  Lisa Collyer is a poet and educator living and working in Boorloo (Perth). She writes poetry like the jagged edge of a can opened-up with a lens on women’s bodies. She has been published in Westerly, Cordite, Rabbit, Australian Poetry Anthology and more. She was an Inspire writer-in-residence with The National Trust of W.A. and was short-listed for The Dorothy Hewett Award for her unpublished manuscript. Her debut collection, How to Order Eggs Sunny Side Up will be published with Life Before Man, the poetry imprint of Gazebo Books in September 2023.
