We are delighted to announce that Dennis Haskell will be our new elder-in-residence. Our Elder-in-residence program has been made possible through donations from our Community Fund donors. 

Emeritus Professor Dennis Haskell is the author of nine collections of poetry, the most recent And Yet… (WA Poets Publishing, 2020), Ahead of Us (Fremantle Press, 2016) and What Are You Doing Here? (University of The Philippines Press, 2015), as well as fourteen volumes of literary scholarship and criticism.

Dennis was Co-editor of Westerly magazine from 1985-2009 and is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia. He is the recipient of the Western Australia Premier’s Prize for Poetry, the A A Phillips Prize for a distinguished contribution to Australian literature (awarded by the Association for the Study of Australian Literature), and of an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from The University of Western Australia. He has won local and national teaching awards, and has served as Visiting Professor and Poet at universities and literary festivals in England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, The Philippines and the USA as well as many locations in Australia. He is a Member of the Order of Australia for “services to literature, particularly poetry, to education and to intercultural understanding”.

Dennis will take up his residency at Centre for Stories in April and will be working on a number of projects including an article on the history of English poetic form and their social context for a conference in Canberra in December; judging a poetry competition for the American Association for Australian and New Zealand Literary Studies; assessing and editing poetry manuscripts for the book series published by WA Poets Publishing.

We are now calling for nominations for our next elder-in-residence. This three-month residency provides a $3000 stipend for a storyteller over the age of 60 who has been practising their craft for at least ten years. The residency is open to Western Australian performers, writers, poets, oral storytellers, and scriptwriters. Nominees must be permanent residents, Australian citizens, or be living on a temporary protection visa. Applications close at 5pm AWST on 1 March 2022.
