Announcing: Comic Creator Hot Desk Fellow

Katie Zhang Selected as Recipient, with Frankie Stevens and Ali Marbeck Highly Commended

March 18, 2024

Centre for Stories is delighted to announce Katie Zhang as the inaugural recipient of the Comic Creator Hot Desk Fellowship. This fellowship, in partnership with the Perth Comic Arts Festival (PCAF), aims to support comic creators in Western Australia.

The fellowship offers a dedicated workspace at the Centre for Stories for a total of 10 days, spread out over 8 to 12 consecutive weeks, providing creators like Katie with an environment conducive to creativity and productivity. Alongside this, Katie will benefit from regular mentorship check-ins from a PCAF committee member, ensuring ongoing support throughout her creative process.

Katie, a freelance illustrator and comic artist, brings a unique perspective to her work, with a focus on crafting psychological narratives that delve into character relationships and dynamics. Her selection as the fellowship recipient reflects her dedication to storytelling and her alignment with the goals of the fellowship.

In addition to the workspace and mentorship, PCAF will provide print design assistance to Katie, helping to bring her vision to life. Furthermore, Katie will have the opportunity to exhibit her final work at PCAF’s Market Day, scheduled for July 28, 2024, at the State Library of Western Australia.

“We are thrilled to have Katie as our first Comic Creator Hot Desk Fellow,” said Logan Griffiths, Program Co-Ordinator – Writing AND Publications at Centre for Stories. “Her passion for storytelling and her commitment to creating meaningful narratives make her an ideal recipient for this fellowship.”

In addition to Katie’s selection, Centre for Stories would like to acknowledge Frankie Stevo and Ali Marbeck, who were both highly commended for their outstanding submissions. Their contributions reflect the diverse talent within Western Australia’s comic creator community.

As Katie embarks on her fellowship journey, Centre for Stories and PCAF are excited to see her craft grow and look forward to the impact of her work on the local comic arts scene.
