First Nations Book Club at Story Lounge – The White Girl by Tony Birch

Our First Nations Book Club is an introduction to a diverse range of texts by First Nations authors.

May 26, 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Story Lounge

Our First Nations Book Club is an introduction to a diverse range of texts by First Nations authors. Through an informal conversation we discuss each text, explore its themes, and celebrate First Nations stories and storytellers. Everyone is welcome to attend this safe space.

This session will be facilitated by Franchesca Walker, and the selected text is The White Girl by Tony Birch.

In The White Girl, Miles-Franklin-shortlisted author Tony Birch shines a spotlight on the 1960s and the devastating government policy of taking Indigenous children from their families. It follows Odette Brown, who has lived her whole life on the fringes of a small country town, who is left to raise his granddaughter Sissy after her daughter disappears. Odette has managed to stay under the radar of the welfare authorities who are removing fair-skinned Aboriginal children from their families, but when a new policeman arrives in town, determined to enforce the law, Odette must risk everything to save Sissy and protect everything she loves.

Please note this event is being hosted at Story Lounge, our new storytelling pop-up in Hay Street Mall.
