Brought to you by Centre for Stories and Performing Lines WA, this interactive workshop is designed for emerging playwrights and curious writers to create pathways and opportunities to seed the development of universal stories for the stage.
Presented by playwright, actor Mararo Wangai and Award-winning Asian Australian playwright, voice over artist and actor Grace Chow , we will begin with a talk and presentation on the ethics of storytelling and representation of diverse cultures on the stage, followed by breakout group activities to engage participants and spark creative ideas.

The event will be held at Centre for Stories, Northbridge WA 6003. Centre for Stories is a wheelchair accessible venue.
The Perth train station is a 10-minute walk from Centre for Stories. The closest Wilson parking is 2 minutes away at Northbridge Central, 8/6 Errichetti Place.

Mararo Wangai
Collapse BioMararo Wangai is a Kenyan-born writer, performer and media graduate, with a passionate interest in diverse forms of storytelling. His work strives to avoid simplistic narratives, assess society critically and tries to remain adaptive, organic and alive through its development, until the eventual encounter with an audience. He is attracted to stories that deal with the struggles of humanity, and creating work that not only tests his craft both in writing and performance but work that pushes him and his audience away from comfort zones, expectations and the mundane, into the unforgiving unknown where we might both learn deeper lessons for the next chapter. Mararo is currently working on the development of a new work with Belvoir Theatre Sydney and Arts House Melbourne, the development of a TV Series with Screen West and Screen Australia as well as a debut music album with Mahamudo Selimane to be released in 2024.

Grace Chow
Collapse BioGrace Chow is an award-winning Asian Australian playwright, voice over artist and actor. She is most well known for playing Constable Cindy Cheung in the critically-acclaimed Australian noir series Mystery Road: Origin (2022) on the ABC and BBC4; and for her role as Wendy Hang in season 2 of the nation’s hit drama series The Twelve (coming soon in 2024) starring Sam Neill on FOXTEL and BINGE. Chow is also a critically acclaimed playwright and theatre-maker herself, notably winning the prestigious Griffin Playwright's Award in 2022 and working as the Associate Artist at Barking Gecko Theatre in 2023. Other writing highlights include Juxta in The Sydney Festival 2022 and the National Studio Residency (Australian Theatre for Young People) in 2019, where her work Dance Ourselves to Death was published by Currency Press. In 2024, she looks forward to several writing commissions, including contributions to the Black Swan State Theatre Company and the WA Youth Theatre Company seasons, and also shooting in the main cast of her first US television series (currently under embargo). Chow’s expansive career boasts an impressive array of performances across live art forms, including theatre, opera and musical theatre on Australia’s main-stages in both leading and supporting roles. These shows include The Cherry Orchard (Black Swan State Theatre Co, Perth Festival 2021), PANAWATHI GIRL (Yirra Yaakin Theatre Co, Perth Festival 2022), The Great Unwondering of Wilbur Whittaker (Barking Gecko, 2022), Our Little Inventor (The West Australian Opera, AWESOME FESTIVAL 2022), OIL (Black Swan State Theatre Co, 2022), Telephone (The Last Great Hunt, 2022) and The Snow (Barking Gecko Theatre Co, 2023). Having originally trained at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, she has since built and cemented the reputation within the industry as an actor and writer of expansive talent, rigour and skill spanning comedic, experimental, and dramatic genres. Grace is also known for her advocacy in the arts sector regarding accessibility, interculturality and inclusion, working as an associate artist or artist advisor for multiple flagship Australian arts companies in the independent and mainstage sector.
