On the evening of Saturday 14 December 2019, we were joined by Roanna Gonsalves and Chris Lin as they shared a conversation around writing practice, difficulties encountered in the literary world, what it means to write about tolerance and intolerance while breaking out of the dominant narrative, and much more. Roanna Gonsalves is a writer with an interdisciplinary practice. She is the author of The Permanent Resident (UWAP) published in India and South Asia as Sunita De Souza Goes To Sydney (Speaking Tiger Books). The book won the NSW Premier’s Literary Award Multicultural Prize 2018 and was longlisted for the Dobbie Literary Award 2018. Her research interests are in the sociology of literature, social media, creativity studies, and postcolonial literatures.

Chris Lin is a Perth-based educator and writer. Having migrated to Australia from Myanmar at the age of seven, he has an enduring attachment to Myanmar’s people, cultures, places, and stories. He completed his PhD in English at the University of Western Australia and is a keen contributor to the Perth writing community. Passionate about human rights and international affairs, Chris has participated in local efforts to promote awareness around Myanmar’s current crisis.
