Raphael Farmer

A man smiling at the camera.

Raphael Farmer is a Young Adult author originally from the island of Mauritius and now based in Perth, Western Australia. His short story “Island Boy” will be published in a forthcoming anthology, Wave After Wave by Centre for Stories. In 2018, he participated in the Indian Ocean Mentoring Project through the Centre for Stories. His ‘own voices’ short stories “Carried Away” and “Firefly” are available as e-books. Raphael studied Film and Television and Screenwriting at Edith Cowan University, and he works as a high school English teacher.

Raphael’s background as a gay man raised Muslim in a multicultural island nation has influenced his storytelling. He is driven to explore the intersection of sexual, social and cultural identities in his writing, with his fiction often revolving around characters undertaking a transformation or change in their identity. As an immigrant to Australia, he has experienced the simultaneous excitement and dislocation of leaving behind both a homeland and his native languages (French and Creole) and this informs much of his art.

Raphael is currently working on a full-length ‘own voices’ YA manuscript which focuses on identity and the devastating effects of toxic relationships.
