Six award winning writers will offer a series of six Masterclasses that delve deep into the heart of story. These Masterclasses are suitable for emerging and established writers who are committed to focussing on individual aspects of their writing and developing that writing further. Writers of colour, writers living with a disability, and LGBTQIA+ writers are especially encouraged to attend.

The Narrative Landscape with Portland Jones

Tim Winton once said that ‘Australia has more landscape than culture,’ and while this may or may not be true it is certainly true that many Australian authors have a particular affinity with place.

Place is personal and temporal, but also political, cultural and historical.

Place is both where we are and where we want to be.

Join Portland Jones for a workshop exploring the narrative landscape. You’ll write, read (and sweat) and you’ll explore what place means to you and your writing practice. Be prepared to write and share and to challenge yourself to find new ways of representing place in fiction. Suitable for writers of all levels of expertise who wish to explore and add depth to their fiction and creative non-fiction, essays and memoir.

Other Masterclasses

While you are encouraged to attend all six classes, you may also choose to attend individual sessions as each class is run by a different writer, although the whole program has been developed holistically and consultatively.

Portland Jones is both a writer and a horse trainer. She has a PhD in literature and runs her own horse-training business. Her first novel, Seeing the Elephant was was shortlisted for the 2015 T.A.G Hungerford Award and then published by Margaret River Press in 2016. She lives in Perth’s Swan Valley with her three children and assorted animals.

  Portland Jones lives in the Swan Valley outside Perth with her partner and three children, where she trains horses. Her debut novel, 'Seeing the Elephant', was shortlisted for the T.A.G. Hungerford Award for an unpublished West Australian writer in 2014.
