Six award winning writers will offer a series of six Masterclasses that delve deep into the heart of story. These Masterclasses are suitable for emerging and established writers who are committed to focussing on individual aspects of their writing and developing that writing further. Writers of colour, writers living with a disability, and LGBTQIA+ writers are especially encouraged to attend.

The Hybrid (Decolonised) Narrative with Rashida Murphy

This Masterclass explores the ways in which the creative process combines elements of the personal, social, imaginary and cautionary impulses to create ‘hybrid’ narratives. The imagination does not automatically categorise narratives as fiction or non-fiction; instead it explores the links between memory, landscape, language and form, and seeks to make connections between what is familiar and what is not. In this session, participants will look at examples of genre-crossing narratives and explore multiplicity and hybridity in literature – such as race, language, landscape, culture, character, structure. Participants will experiment with layered writing that functions on several levels. They will learn original and insightful strategies to use on an existing piece of writing as well as creating new work. Suitable for writers at all levels of practice, this session will conclude with tips on how to sustain your creative endeavours, thriving instead of striving, and opening up new ways of thinking about your writing.

Other Masterclasses

While you are encouraged to attend all six classes, you may also choose to attend individual sessions as each class is run by a different writer, although the whole program has been developed holistically and consultatively.

Rashida Murphy lives and works on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation. She runs workshops on writing and aspects of culture, race and identity, and mentors emerging writers of colour. Rashida’s prose and poetry have been published internationally in journals and anthologies. Her novel, The Historian’s Daughter was shortlisted in the Dundee International Book Prize in 2015 and published in 2016 by UWA Publishing. She is currently working on a new novel as well as a collection of short stories. More information can be found on her website.

  Rashida Murphy lives and works on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation. She runs workshops on writing and aspects of culture, race, and identity, and mentors emerging writers. Rashida is the author of a novel, The Historian’s Daughter, which was shortlisted in the Dundee International Book Prize and published by UWA Publishing. She has also been shortlisted for both the Carmel Bird Literary Award and the NSW Premier’s Literary Award for her collection of short stories titled, The Bonesetter’s Fee & Other Stories.
