Join Sean Cowan and take a walk in the footsteps of gangsters, murderers, drug dealers and sex workers in this 90-minute tour of Northbridge’s most notorious crime spots of yesteryear. From the site of a 1950s Calabrian mafia murder, to the containment era brothels and the gambling houses of the 1970s, you’ll be captivated by Perth’s seedier side, as you hear about the crime figures who shaped life in Perth last century.
Sean Cowan was a reporter at The West Australian for 14 years, much of which was spent reporting on organised crime. He won 17 journalism awards during this period, including the WA Journalist of the Year award on three occasions. The last of those awards was received in 2010 when he was recognised for a 10-part investigative series on WA’s organised crime scene since the 1970s. After leaving The West Australian in 2012, Cowan worked for four years as a journalism lecturer at Curtin University and earned a First Class Honours in History at Murdoch University. He is currently the Managing Editor for Fairfax Media’s regional operations in Western Australia and has written an as-yet unpublished series on crime in Perth in the first half of the 20th century.

This walk will begin at the Centre for Stories on Aberdeen Street and concludes outside the State Library Car Park on Francis Street.
